The collaboration between Richard Siegal and Alva Noto began in 2013, when the
US choreographer created his first ballet UNITXT based on the musical composition
of the same name for the Bavarian State Ballet. What was laid out a decade ago as
an artistic position on the relationship between ballet and technology now finds its
completion in the trilogy NOISE SIGNAL SILENCE. Alongside the energetic cult
choreography UNITXT will be OVAL, created for Staatsballett Berlin in 2019. The
music, composed especially for this finale of the trilogy, creates a charged, almost
hypnotic atmosphere in which twelve dancers move under a futuristic-looking, oval-
shaped light object. The intermediate piece is IN A LANDSCAPE, which was also
created for the Bavarian State Ballet in 2016: based on a musical collaboration
between Alva Noto and Ryūichi Sakamoto (the two also wrote the soundtrack for the
Hollywood film THE REVENANT), it is a dreamlike, enraptured ballet that is
characterized by a meditative inwardness, thus perfectly rounding off this
multifaceted trilogy.
