The Richard Siegal / Ballet of Difference company at Schauspiel Köln considers itself a joyful expression of a multicultural present and a forward-looking alternative to established institutions. In 2020 the entire BoD ensemble was nominated for the prestigious German theater prize, Der Faust, in the category “Best Performer”. Richard Siegal / Ballet of Difference have their roots in Munich and still maintain a close artistic relationship with the city. The U.S. choreographer and his company have since relocated to Cologne, their home of choice and centre of their working lives, where they’ve advanced to become the city’s ballet company.

To create the stunning visual worlds in his pieces, Siegal collaborates with world-renown fashion designers, visual artists, light designers, musicians and scientists. Dancing classical ballet en pointe, Richard Siegal / Ballet of Difference traverse social discourses, aesthetic disciplines and artistic expressions. The company goes beyond all limits - BoD performances take place on stage, in museums and in analog and digital spaces.

Die Kompanie Richard Siegal / Ballet of Difference am Schauspiel Köln versteht sich als freudvoller Ausdruck einer multikulturellen Gegenwart und als zukunftsgewandte Alternative zu den etablierten Institutionen. Das gesamte BoD-Ensemble wurde 2020 für den renommierten Theaterpreis DER FAUST in der Kategorie »Beste*r Darsteller*in« nominiert. Die Wurzeln von Richard Siegal / Ballet of Difference liegen in der Stadt München, mit der Richard Siegal / Ballet of Difference weiterhin ein enges künstlerisches Verhältnis pflegt. Der US-Choreograf und seine Kompanie haben mittlerweile Lebens- und Arbeitsmittelpunkt in ihre neue Wahlheimat Köln verlegt, wo sie zur Ballettkompanie der Stadt avanciert sind.

Für die überwältigenden Bildwelten seiner Stücke kollaboriert Richard Siegal mit weltweit renommierten Fashion-Designer*innen, Visual Artists, Lichtkünstler*innen, Musiker*innen und Wissenschaftler*innen. Ausgehend von der klassischen Tradition des Spitzentanzes bewegt sich Richard Siegal / Ballet of Difference quer durch gesellschaftliche Diskurse, ästhetische Disziplinen und künstlerische Ausdrucksformen. Dabei geht die Kompanie über alle Grenzen hinaus: BoD-Performances finden auf Theaterbühnen und in Museen, im analogen und im virtuellen Raum statt.
